Last year, as I created my schedule for the Spring 2019 semester I knew I wanted to learn a new language. I had six choices I could choose from: Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, German, and ASL.
German was my first choice, Spanish my second, but the more I thought about it the more I began to realize how beneficial learning ASL would be. Why? Well, because my uncle is Deaf and absolutely NO ONE in my family (at least that I’m aware of) knows how to sign.
With that being said, I added the class to my enrollment cart and I’ve been learning ASL ever since. I began my lessons at my local community college in January, and so far I’ve been loving it.
Here is a Video you can learn some basic ASL Sign Language with no cost.
Yeah, my fingerspelling could be faster, my receptive skills could use a little boost, but the fact that I continue to push myself is so rewarding. Learning a language different from your own and learning about another culture is equally as rewarding. I highly encourage you all to learn another language. Even taking the time to get a few of the phrases and basic vocabulary down counts.
If any of you are learning ASL or are proficient in ASL (whether you’re Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Hearing) then please, please, please, please let me know. I would love to create a study group and have someone to practice with!
